Gather around literature in 2013
Ireland is renowned the world over for its literary greats and its inspired city and landscapes.
With the Gathering Ireland 2013 dedicated to celebrating all that is great about Ireland, it is only fitting that “literary gatherings” would feature strongly in the mammoth programme of festivals and events scheduled for 2013.
So what literary treats are in store for next year?
Ennis Book Club Festival (1st -3rd March)
The Ennis Book Club is a unique festival dedicated to book clubs. Celebrating and promoting the pleasure of reading, the festival explores literature of all genres through workshops, readings, seminars and panel discussions. A wonderful literary and social gathering, the festival also combines music, dance, food, and theatre, why not gather your Book Club in Ennis in 2013?
Cúirt International Festival of Literature (23rd – 28th April)
Cúirt International Festival of Literature is Ireland’s premier literary festival held every April in Galway City and welcomes national and international writers, poets, playwrights, songwriters for a week-long celebration of the written word. Another jam-packed programme with readings, discussions, lectures and debates, this friendly festival unites writers and the general public in their love of literature.
Listowel Writers Week (29th May – 2nd June)
North Kerry is the birthplace of many of Ireland’s most prominent writers past and present including Dr. John B Keane, Dr Bryan Mac Mahon, Professor Brendan Kennelly, Gabriel Fitzmaurice, George Fitzmaurice, Maurice Walsh and Robert Leslie Boland. Since its inception in 1970 Listowel Writers Week celebrates these writers each year and provides an opportunity for new and established authors both Irish and International to develop their skills and meet fellow writers.
The week-long celebration features a wide ranging programme of literary and cultural events, including lectures, readings, workshops, book launches, seminars, interviews, theatre, literary and historical tours, art exhibitions and music and dance. To mark the Gathering Ireland 2013, Listowel Writers Week will be introducing a series of special events themed around Writing and the Irish Diapsora. Whether you are a budding writer, a literary enthused or a culture vulture, Listowel Writer’s Week is a fantastic celebration of Ireland’s literature heritage and a highlight in the literary calendar for 2013.
Yeats Day Gathering (13th June)
The 13th of June marks W.B. Yeats’ birthday and what is now commonly known as Yeats’ Day in Sligo. A special literary gathering is being built around Yeats’ Day in Sligo for 2013 in celebration of all Irish writers. Full details to be announced in January but this is one to earmark in the calendar for next year.
The Oscar Wild Gathering (7th-8th September)
Speaking of literary greats, another gathering worth noting for 2013 is the Oscar Wild Gathering. This gathering is set to take place in Galway in September and is dedicated to celebrating the life and works of the great Oscar Wilde along with exploring the strong connections between his writing and the west of Ireland.
Women Writers Week (1st – 4th October)
A new event for 2013 is the Women Writers Week in South Galway which is extending an invite to women writers of Irish descent all over the world to gather in Gort from October 1st – October 4th. This gathering is inspired by Lady Augusta Gregory (1852-1932) from neighbouring Coole Parke, who led the way from women writers in Ireland.
Throughout Ireland in 2013 a series of local literary festivals and creative workshops are on offer set amidst the breath-taking landscape that helped inspire our most famous writers both past and present. Gather around literature in 2013 and celebrate this distinctive element of the Irish culture.
